Mentoring

Someone who can advise you to find the right direction, build your skills and capabilities and achieve a goal you are aiming for.

Wikipedia states that the word mentor ‘was inspired by the character of Mentor in Homer‘s Odyssey. The actual Mentor in the story is a somewhat ineffective old man. The goddess Athena takes on his appearance in order to guide young Telemachus in his time of difficulty.’

In a mentoring relationship, the mentor is sharing some of their experience in work or life (or both!)

It can work well if you have taken on a new role. If, for example you’ve taken a step up or responsibility for managing people and want some ongoing support to help you make the transition.

Sharing my experiences from working in Human Resources can be particularly helpful to give you a wider perspective or put the challenges you’re facing into context.
